This guided tourof the Seaside District, designated a “protected area,” takes you on a journey through the key milestones that transformed this small fishing village into a major seaside resort on the Picardy Coast.
A guided walk lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes recounting the history of the seaside district (1865–1905), designated a “remarkable heritage site.” With the discovery of sea bathing and its therapeutic benefits, Mers experienced spectacular growth. At the end of the 19th century, the railroad brought the first vacationers—known as “baigneurs”—to our shores. These visitors, drawn from the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie of the time, settled here, building the first vacation homes of our modern world.
