Amanda Herold-Marme will talk about the exhibition at Galerie Charpentier in 1942 as part of the Quinzaine d?art espagnol. Organized in conjunction with the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de la Phalange in Paris, with the approval of the occupying forces and the participation of numerous pro-Republican avant-gardists, this event crystallized the paradoxes and contradictions of the Spanish art scene under the Occupation.
This is followed by "The Art of Republican Spain: Spanish Artists of the Paris School", held in Prague in early 1946. This was a landmark exhibition of the post-war anti-Franco artistic front, a high point in the pro-Republican movement that also served to restore the tarnished reputation of the Ecole de Paris. As well as shedding new light on Picasso?s unwavering anti-Franco commitment and Salvador Dali?s alignment with the Franco camp, the careers of exiled artists hitherto largely forgotten by history will also be explored.
Amanda Herold-Marme?s book will be available for purchase at the event.
The lecture will be followed by a book signing.
Registration required.
